Tired of shinny skin? Try These Effective Oily Skin Products!

Easily the largest human organ, skin types range from oily to dry.  Dry skin is caused by underactive sebaceous glands, while oily skin occurs when these glands produce too much sebum.  A naturally healthy skin lubricant, excess sebum causes shininess, pimples, blemishes, and other common dermal conditions.  On the plus side, however, sebum actually helps prevents wrinkles and other signs of aging, since the oil keeps moisture locked inside the skin.

The downside of the oily-skin type is that sebum can easily block or clog pores, which may lead to acne breakouts or other skin eruptions or problems.  Even though dermatologists might consider oily skin healthy, sometimes it doesn\'t look that way.  Sebaceous skin is often rougher in texture than normal skin and may appear sallow with large, clearly-visible pores. 

What causes oily skin?
Because skin tends to become dryer as we age, oily skin is far more common in teenagers and young adults than it is in older individuals.  Diet, hormones, pregnancy, and cosmetics can increase the flow of sebum, but heredity is the most common cause.  The problem is often exacerbated during periods of increased hormonal activity such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Those who have combination skin, which is characterised by oily skin in some environments and dry or normal skin in others, are clearly affected by the weather.

Popular oily skin products
As we mentioned, the main drawback of having oily skin is that too much sebum tends to clog pores, which often leads to acne breakouts and other skin problems. Fortunately, the solution to this problem is quite simple.  All you have to do is use special cleaners and plenty of soap and hot water to prevent your pores from getting clogged up.  Unfortunately, many of the products on the market today are not designed for oily skin and are too harsh.

When a person with oily skin uses harsh products on her skin, she may strip it of all oils, which can cause a reaction called seborrhea. Seborrhea occurs when the already overactive sebaceous glands work doubly hard to compensate for the lack of natural oils in the skin.

How can you identify harsh oily skin products?
When your skin feels taut, over-dried, or dehydrated, it often means the skincare products you are using are robbing your epidermis of essential oils. This often results in the situation you were trying to avoid, that is, clogged pores that lead to breakouts.

Cleansing
To prevent blockages, oily skin should be washed at least two to three times each day.  Use oil-based cleansers that are specially designed to dissolve sebum on contact.  These oily skin products will not over-dry your skin, which may lead to breakouts.

Moisturizing
To maintain a normal, healthy complexion, it may be necessary to use a daily moisturizer.  These oily skin products should not contain any oil, since that will produce a shiny appearance in skin that already contains more than enough sebum.

Cosmetics
Makeup and excess sebum simply do not mix.  Women with oily skin are far more likely to suffer breakouts if they use products that are not designed for their skin type. Face skin care products that diminish sebaceous secretions should be used before makeup is applied.  Look for day creams or light antiseptic night creams that contain benzyl peroxide, an ingredient that removes excess skin oil.
